In our last blog publication, India the ultimate destination, we discovered that a great way to discover India would be by motorbike, so, here we dig a little deeper. Now we will focus on why you should rent a motorcycle. What you need. In addition to where you can rent a motorbike in some of the top destination areas in India. Our first stop is the Province of Uttar Pradesh. Here we will be exploring rentals in 2 main cities; Lucknow and Delhi. Although I have focused on these cities, there are many rental companies scattered around the area.
Why rent a motorbike?
For city trips renting a motorbike will give you the freedom to explore wherever you want to go at your own pace. Public transport such as busses and trains can be confusing to book. they are not always the most comfortable ride and more often than not are delayed which can ruin your schedule.
Renting a motorbike in India and making your own path is undoubtedly an unforgettable experience. It gives you a chance to explore where ever you choose. Getting away from the bustling tourist attractions and a chance to explore some of the forgotten treasures along the way. Furthermore, you will also get a chance to see the local way of living. Experiencing the true India first hand. In conclusion, it is better to rent a motorbike over purchasing as there are many difficulties. Even if you plan to stay for a while as it has a lot of complicated paperwork for foreigners. You can not register it in your name but must fill in paperwork for change of ownership and transfer of insurance. Remember bikes older than 15 years old are banned from Delhi roads.
Requirements for renting a motorbike in India?
You must be 18 years old or older to rent a motorcycle.
To rent a bike in India you need a valid international driver’s permit, as well as your domestic license, especially if your country doesn’t have an agreement of recognition of your home license. Your rental may rent you a bike without seeing it but you will not be covered by insurance and could be fined if stopped by the police.
Secondly, you’ll need to leave a cash deposit for your motorcycle. this will vary not only from company to company but also what bike you rent. You will often also need to present your passport( or other official forms of ID) to the rental company. Make sure to keep your personal paperwork as you will need them along your trip eg when checking into a hotel, and to get a receipt for your deposit.
Also, you will need to check if you require local permits. In some areas, particularly in the northern areas, you cannot bring a motorcycle rental in from another region. Although with many rules of the road there is often a way around this. Be aware most rental companies levy late fees.

Travel Tips
Finally, we will give you a few pointers and things to look out for when you rent a motorbike in India. Make sure to check out the other Indian motorbike rental posts for more similar tips.
Make sure you are prepared for the road conditions. Many roads off the beaten path are often uneven and not well maintained. Although the city roads tarmacked, driving will still be challenging with; heavy traffic and the flexibility of the rules of the road. In light of this, make sure you know what you’re doing and are comfortable driving in stressful conditions. Ultimately, wherever you are be prepared for the local traffic to include cattle.
Confirm your bike is in good condition when you pick it up from the rental agency. It’s worth giving it a test ride if possible. In addition, check you know what the agreements are in case of breakdown or problems. It would certainly be a great idea to have some basic mechanical knowledge. Furthermore carry some spares such as; puncture kits, fuses, tyre tubes to name a few. If you do find yourself having difficulties, the locals are friendly and often happy to help or point you in the right direction.
One of the popular motorbikes to rent in India is, of course, the Royal Enfield Bullet. It’s a great bike, reliable, and easy to get hold of ( as well as parts). This is a great bike for short trips but not recommendable for long tours. If you’re in for the long haul try a Royal Enfield Himalayan. It’s a significantly smoother and more comfortable ride.
